CCA Commends FCC for Recognizing Challenges Small Carriers Face in Completing Nationwide Number Portability

Washington, DC – October 3, 2017 – Today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) and Notice of Inquiry (NOI) attempting to accomplish nationwide number portability, noting that among wireless competitors, smaller rural and regional carriers are at a disadvantage compared to their nationwide counterparts.  Competitive Carriers Association (CCA) commends the Commission for its work to complete nationwide number portability and for recognizing the unique challenges smaller rural and regional carriers face.

In a statement, CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry said, “I applaud the FCC’s work to complete nationwide number portability and am pleased the Commission recognized CCA’s advocacy on behalf of rural and regional carriers – many of whom have experienced problems with porting-in wireless numbers from disparate parts of the country.  Competitive carriers already face substantial challenges competing with the largest national carriers, and are only placed in a further competitive disadvantage compared to the largest carriers who are able to port-in numbers regardless of location.”

“All consumers, no matter where they live, should be able to choose the carrier that best meets their needs – in every way.  I encourage the Commission to continue its good work with the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions and the North American Numbering Council to help find a solution that works for all carriers – both large and small – so that consumers can reap the benefits of competitive choices.  But with all the intricate parts of accomplishing this lofty goal, strong leadership is needed to cross the finish line.  I thank the Commission and especially Chairman Pai for his leadership on number portability and look forward to our continued work on this important issue.”
