The telemedicine, or tele-doc, initiative is gaining significant traction not only within the mobile industry but also across other industries due to high deductibles, over-whelming co-pays, and a shortage of primary care doctors. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) has frequently recognized the enormous benefits of telemedicine, with programs like its Rural Health Care fund. Most recently, the FCC issued a Public Notice on ways to accelerate adoption and accessibility of broadband-enabled health care solutions and advanced technologies, and the FCC rightly notes that broadband connectivity can serve as a gateway to a number of critical services, including health care.
The FCC’s sentiment is shared on Capitol Hill, where Senators Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Brian Schatz (D-HI), the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet, recently introduced legislation to expand access to rural telehealth services. Telemedicine is a game-changer for consumers, and as Senator Wicker explained, “[t]elehealth services are critical to increasing rural Americans’ access to quality care.”
