NTIA Spectrum Report

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) yesterday released a long-awaited study about the 1755-1850 MHz spectrum band.  We’re very pleased that NTIA found it possible to repurpose all 95 MHz of this spectrum, as many CCA members desperately need additional spectrum to address growing consumer demands.  While the report is generally positive about repurposing this spectrum, as they say, “the devil is in the details,” and we look forward to working with NTIA and the FCC on next steps while further analyzing the details of the report.

To address the spectrum needs of competitive carriers, it is critical that all options are considered.  Commercial and Government users must use spectrum in an efficient manner, and spectrum made available for commercial use by auction or on the secondary market must be available for competitive carrier use.

Simply designating more spectrum as possible for repurposing for commercial use is a good starting point, but does not finish the job.  Spectrum needs to be made available to competitive carriers in a way that it can be put to use immediately by spectrum starved operators to provide an alternative service for consumers.
