CCA Applauds Bipartisan Senate Letter Urging Sufficient and Predictable Wireless USF Support
Washington, DC – February 2, 2017 – Today, 30 United States Senators – Senators Roger Wicker (R-MS), Joe Manchin (D-WV), along with 28 of their colleagues, sent a letter to Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) Chairman Ajit Pai encouraging the Commission to adopt a Universal Service Fund (USF) Mobility Fund Phase II (MFII) program that provides sufficient and predictable support. Competitive Carriers Association (CCA) commends the Senators for the letter, as many competitive carriers, especially those serving rural and high-cost areas, use USF support to supplement private capital and provide service to consumers.
“I thank the Senators, especially Senators Wicker and Manchin, for their bipartisan letter regarding mobile USF, an absolutely critical issue for competitive carriers serving rural and regional America,” said Steven K. Berry, President & CEO of CCA. “Carriers, especially those serving rural and hard-to-reach areas, need certainty of ongoing support to provide the best services to their customers, build out and maintain their networks and make investment plans for the future. The Senators are exactly right – the FCC has the ability to provide this much-needed certainty now – by ensuring sufficient and predictable USF support through implementation of a reasonable MFII program and the transition away from legacy support mechanisms over the next several years.”
“It is abundantly clear that there is broad bipartisan support from Congress to close the digital divide for low-income and rural Americans. The FCC has the ability to craft an appropriate USF system that will bring us one step closer to achieving this important goal, and I strongly urge the Commission to look to today’s letter as it moves forward with MFII. Congress supports this effort, consumers demand it, and new jobs and the economy depend on it.”
