CCA Encourages FCC to Continue Progress Toward Making America 5G Ready Through Competition and Tailored Regulatory Reform

Washington, DC – July 27, 2018 – There are still too many parts of the United States that lack access to reliable 3G and 4G mobile wireless coverage. Yesterday, as the industry is in the midst of a transition to next-generation and 5G technologies, Competitive Carriers Association (“CCA”) submitted comments with the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC” or “Commission”) to discuss the current state of mobile wireless competition in advance of its first Communications Marketplace Report.

“I thank Chairman Pai and the Commission for its work to bridge the digital divide by removing unnecessary barriers to mobile broadband deployment. As America moves forward, the Commission also must recognize regulatory barriers to competitive entry into the mobile wireless market and address limitations affecting the mobile ecosystem,” said CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry. “Nationwide competition for mobile wireless service does not yet exist for everyone. Recent action by the Commission, Administration, Congress, and other federal agencies validate that there are parts of the country that do not receive, much less have competitive choice for, mobile wireless service.”

“The new Communications Marketplace Report presents the perfect opportunity for the FCC to perform a robust analysis of the state of competition and deployment in the mobile wireless marketplace and should incent the Commission to continue to focus on barriers to competition and ways to address those challenges. Tailored reforms that inspire access to more spectrum for competitive carriers, continue to streamline infrastructure siting practices, and provide for a robust and efficient Mobility Fund II challenge process, among other important regulatory reforms, will ensure we can provide new wireless services to all consumers. In assessing the market characteristics, the Commission should rely on the experience of competitive carriers like CCA members – and most importantly the consumers they serve – who work every day to connect all corners of the United States.”
