CCA Urges the FCC to Auction All Available Millimeter Wave Spectrum Bands as Quickly as Possible

Washington, DC – May 9, 2018 – Today, Competitive Carriers Association (“CCA”) filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC” or “Commission”) regarding bidding procedures for auctioning 28 GHz and 24 GHz millimeter wave (“mmW”) spectrum. Specifically, CCA encouraged the FCC to auction all available mmW spectrum bands as expeditiously as possible, modify bidding procedures to enhance participation, ensure anti-collusion rules are not overly restrictive, and grant CCA’s pending Applications for Review of certain mmW spectrum transactions.

“CCA applauds the FCC’s efforts to unleash additional spectrum resources and encourages the Commission to adopt balanced mmW auction procedures to ensure all carriers can access mmW licenses at auction to pave the way to deploying next-generation technologies,” said CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry. “As the FCC considers rules that will govern the mmW spectrum auction process and the industry prepares for 5G deployments, I strongly encourage the Commission to make as much mmW spectrum available as soon as feasible. CCA’s recommendations will ensure all carriers – regardless of size – can efficiently deploy mmW spectrum quickly, fairly, and without unnecessary barriers.”

“Millimeter wave spectrum offers tremendous opportunities for competitive wireless carriers to develop next-generation technologies, and any rules adopted should allow all carriers the ability to bid on this resource.  mmW spectrum is much too important to be placed in the hands of one or two of the country’s largest carriers.  Consumers, the economy, and the industry will all benefit from a truly competitive mmW auction. I encourage the FCC to adopt rules that promote competition.”
