CCA Member HTC Testifies on Importance of Access to Spectrum

March 16, 2022

Washington, DC – Today, Von Todd, Chief Executive of Corporate Strategy and Analytics at HTC, Inc. and a member of Competitive Carriers Association’s (“CCA”) Board of Directors, testified before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology in its hearing, “5G and Beyond: Exploring the Next Wireless Frontier.” Todd emphasized the importance of greater access to spectrum to ensure competitive carriers, especially smaller carriers, can expand and meet the demands of consumers through the deployment of 5G and next-generation technologies.

In testimony, Todd said, “I thank the Subcommittee for the opportunity to testify on the importance of access to spectrum. Companies like HTC rely on sustainable and predictable access to spectrum to meet the needs and provide a high level of service to our subscribers – whether in urban tourism destinations or rural farmlands. I strongly encourage Congress to renew the FCC’s auction authority, which importantly allows for things like smaller license sizes, to ensure companies like ours have the certainty needed to access and invest in valuable spectrum resources.”

In a statement, CCA President & CEO Steven K. Berry said, “I thank Chairman Doyle, Republican Leader Latte, and Members of the Subcommittee for holding today’s hearing, and I thank Von Todd and HTC, a long-time CCA member, for testifying. Von is exactly right – Congress can, and should, support efforts to ensure Americans have access to next-generation wireless services by extending the FCC’s spectrum auction authority; making additional spectrum bands available for commercial use; and ensuring winning bidders can put their spectrum resources to use as soon as possible. Competitive carriers, especially smaller carriers with limited resources, must have certainty to fully participate in upcoming auctions. More spectrum and greater participation at auctions will result in a positive outcome for consumers, and CCA looks forward to continued work with Congress on this important member issue.”
